Hi-tech firm celebrates first anniversary

This week Economic Services Minister Josef Bonnici paid a visit to FAL Malta Ltd. on the occasion of the first anniversary of the company’s presence in Malta.

FAL Malta Ltd. produces system components and solutions for wireless communication. The company forms part of the Funkanlagen Leipoldt QHG group set up in Germany some ten years ago. Funkanlagen and FALCOM GmbH are active in the field of communications technology, particularly the production and assembly of GSM and GPS and GPRS modems and modules.

In just one year, FAL Malta Ltd. has established itself as the main production facility of the group after the directors in Germany had acknowledged that the high quality skills, infrastructure and incentives package in Malta provided excellent opportunities for the group’s expansion. The factory in Malta represents a substantial investment in state-of-the-art technology and machinery.

During his visit, Prof. Bonnici stated that the company is ahead of its original Business Plan and has already introduced an additional shift due to the ever-increasing workload. FAL Malta Ltd. currently employs 23 persons.

Minister Bonnici also congratulated FAL Malta Ltd. for having already achieved ISO 9001 certification. The company’s exacting requirements mean that all of its workforce (including operators) must be computer literate and highly skilled. Most of them have already been sent abroad for training where they confirmed the underlying positive aptitudes of the Maltese workforce. This was also confirmed by the engineers from Philips, who were entrusted with the installation and commissioning of FAL’s production machinery, who commented very favourably about the Maltese employees.

Minister Bonnici said that the setting up of FAL Malta Ltd had been the result of intensive efforts by the Malta Development Corporation to market Malta overseas. He augured that FAL would continue to grow and be successful in Malta and that they too would serve as a tangible testimonial to the attractive opportunities that exist in Malta for companies willing to locate some of their facilities here.
