Vineyards in the Maltese Islands

The Census of Agriculture for 2001 has released information regarding the number of vineyards present in Malta and Gozo. The census established that the area under vines in the Maltese Islands is of 487.5 hectares. Of these 448.5 hectares are situated in Malta whilst 39 are in Gozo. This area makes for a total of 1,603,289 vines with a grape production of 2,097,676 kilograms for 2001.

Vineyards are concentrated mostly in the Northern District including Mgarr, St Paul’s Bay, Mellieha and Mosta, covering an area of 221.4 hectares. In the Western District involving mainly Rabat and Dingli, vineyards account for 182.4 hectgares.
