GWU against privatisation that cuts jobs

The General Workers Union said it will not be ready to accept any privatisation of Maltacom and Bank of Valletta if it will mean cuts in jobs or a decrease in the employment conditions of the workers.
The two companies were earmarked for further privatisation during Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi’s budget speech last week. The government is seeking to divest itself of its remaining shares in the companies.
Andrew Mizzi, section secretary for the Technology and Electronics sector, said the GWU was preparing itself for any eventual privatisation of these companies. The GWU said its decision was taking in consideration Maltacom’s own profit-making history and its success through the creation of further subsidiary companies
