Drop in registered unemployed for February

As at the end of February 2006, there were a total of 7,669 persons registering for work with the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC). Of these, 7,038 were registering for work under Part 1, and 631 were registered under Part 2. The number of registered unemployed decreased by 28 over the preceding month. On the other hand, when one compares the figures for February 2005 and February 2006, the number of registered unemployed dropped by 425 persons.
Of the total unemployed, the unemployment in Malta reached 6,950 persons, whilst unemployment in Gozo stood at 719 persons.
During February 2006 the number of new registrants under Part 1 of the unemployment register amounted to 282 persons.
At the end of February 2006 there were 2,451 persons (32 per cent) under the age of 24 years. Further analysis of the age variable indicates that there were 1,962 persons (25.6 per cent) aged 45 and over registering for work.
Among the total number of unemployed, 3,579 or 46.7 per cent had been looking for a job for less than 20 weeks, while a further 2,647 persons (34.5per cent) had been looking for a job for more than a year.
In terms of occupations, the most common type of occupations sought by men relates to trades, service-related and elementary work. On the other hand, women tend to go more for clerical, services and sales occupations.
The unemployment rates for February 2006 are not available since the data on the labour supply for this month have not yet been published.
