Melita gearing up for fixed line entry

Fixed telephony will fall into the realm of competition by year’s end as Melita Cable is gearing up to launch its fully-fledged fixed line network that would come with a ‘27’ pre-fix.
The company’s target is to have the system up and running before the end of this year. Melita Cable marketing manager Franco Degabriele said that rolling out the service also depended on a number of technical and regulatory issues, which have a bearing on when the service could become available.
“If it were up to us we would be rolling out at the earliest possible but since this is a fully-fledged fixed telephony system that requires interoperability with existing networks, there are a number of technical and regulatory issues that need to be cleared prior to launching,” Degabriele told Business Today.
At the Trade Fair Melita Cable were accepting bookings for ‘27’ numbers and the company has already embarked on its marketing campaign to entice potential customers to switch to their network.
“The service will enable customers to make and receive telephone calls to and from any fixed or mobile network in Malta and abroad,” Degabriele said.
And Melita Cable’s telephony service will not require any additional cabling for customers who already have cable internet or cable television. “The telephony system requires the installation of a cable modem. For those who already have cable internet, all we would need to do is install the telephone set and assign a number. For cable TV subscribers we would need to install a cable modem. In either case no new cabling would be required,” Degabriele explained.
And with customers bracing themselves for a potential price war, Melita is promising that telephone calls on its network will be cheap.
