Up to 20% in cash rebates for film productions

The investments ministry has officially introduced cash rebates of up to 20% for film productions initiated after 1 June 2005 and until end-2008, on expenditures incurred in Malta.
Qualifying companies will be awarded a maximum of 46 points on their productions, with the highest amount of points determining the level of cash rebates they are eligible for. Main productions with higher levels of recruitment and daily expenditure will be eligible for maximum rebates.
The main expenses eligible for the cash-backs will include spending on Maltese employees, hotel accommodation and rental, daily subsistence to foreign cast and crew working in Malta, catering, phone services, transport, traveling with Air Malta, laundry services and prop rentals, amongst other expenses.
Fuel expenses and materials or supplies purchase in Malta will not be eligible for the rebate.
The film commissioner will also be empowered to examine the film production’s books and premises in order to ensure compliance with the rebate regulations, and will also keep for a minimum of five years, a database of all the financial incentives provided to production companies.
