25% of female employees earn a living from part time work

James Debono

While 9% of gainfully employed men earn their living exclusively from a part time job the number of women relying on part time work for a living amounts to 25% of all gainfully employed females.
This is an indication that females are more likely to earn a precarous living than males as they attempt to reconcile work and family responsibilities. Yet the fact that a tenth of male workers rely on a part time job is indicative of the current trend favouring jobs which offer little job security.
The number of males whose primary source of income derives from a part time job amounts to 9861 while the number of females earning a living from a part time job amounts to 14728.
Only 29.5% of all part timers earning a living exclusively from part time work are aged under 25 years of age. 17,229 persons over the age of 25 depend on a part time for a living.
The number of workers whose sole income derives from a part time job increased from 17013 in 2001 to 24549 in November 2006- a dramatic increase of 44 per cent.
