MIM’s 43rd Annual General Meeting

The Malta Institute of Management (MIM) held its 43rd Annual General Meeting at Corinthia San Gorg Hotel, St. Julian’s on the 24th May 2007 at 6.30pm. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Lawrence Mizzi, MIM President.
In his address Mr. Mizzi reflected on the events of the past year, and stated that the year under review had been a positive one evidenced by the level of dynamic activity of the Institute. He felt that the main goals of the Institute had been realized to some degree or other. Foremost amongst these goals were the raising of the Institute’s profile locally, partnering with other institutions on various areas and turning its training arm into the leading Business School on the Island.
The Institute has in fact established itself as the lobby group for the management profession and now also officially sits on the Forum for Entrepreneurship and the Advisory Board to the MCST.
It has established synergies with various other institutions and bodies and has finalised and signed Memoranda of Understanding with MUBE, KSU and MCST.
Strategic steps were also taken on the training side, and in collaboration with foreign institutions like the UK Chartered Institute of Taxation, the UK Institute of Indirect Taxation and Edinburgh Business School, established new landmarks for higher education in Malta. MIM is also taking an active part in the consultation process with the newly set up Malta Qualification Council and the National Commission for Higher Education. MIM is today considered the leading business school on the Island.
Dr. Edward Firman as Honorary Secretary discussed the Institute’s activities for the year. From the communication side the year was marked by the revamping of the MIM Journal ‘The Manager’, its new publication on EU Affairs entitled ‘The EU Manager”, the issue of the E-Newsletter quarterly and the regular posting of E-News Updates on various matters of interest to its members. A new MIM website has also been re-launched.
Discussion and position papers addressing various issues of national interest and concern were drawn up. These included Budget Proposals for the year 2007, a discussion paper on Tax Harmonisation in the EU, Budget reactions, Budget highlights and The European Manager – a research comparing management practices in the EU. All these were distributed to its members.
MIM gave its contribution in various conferences and discussions and also organised itself various seminars and discussions. A particularly successful breakfast meeting was entitled ‘VAT in Malta – Where to?’, as was the “International Taxation Conference” addressed by world renowned speakers.
During the Meeting Mr. John Dacoutros, a founder member of the MIM, was awarded Life Long Honorary membership.
From the financial side the Honorary Treasurer, Mr. Reuben Buttigieg, reported signs of a turnaround in its bottom line with the first three months of the current year, 2007, showing a substantial surplus. The Institute was now reaping the fruit of wise financial investments and decisions made during the previous months.
