Living with diabetes

On Saturday 15 November, Vivian Corporation together with the Maltese Diabetes Association organised a half day seminar at the Excelsior Hotel in Floriana called Living With Diabetes to mark World Diabetes Day which is celebrated worldwide every year on 14 November.
The aim of the seminar was to provide a relaxed environment for persons with diabetes to tackle everyday problems and queries they may have related to their diet, their foot care and most importantly related to the monitoring of their glucose levels.
Over 200 participants took part in the programme and they were divided into groups. Five groups were organised according to their ages; Children under 12, ages 13-29, ages 30-59 and two groups for 60 plus. The participants were given the opportunity to express themselves better with people of the same age and asked questions freely while the experts present such as psychologists, paediatricians, podologists and dieticians were able to give the persons with diabetes more individual attention.
Throughout the morning, free blood glucose monitoring took place and a number of stands were set up in the main hall allowing participants to view the various diabetic products ranging from sugar free food to insulin syringes and blood glucose meters which could help them to manage their blood glucose optimally. Studies have in fact shown that complications are lower in people with type 2 diabetes using self monitoring blood glucose and that the point at which complications arise could be delayed. This could in turn lead to reductions in the cost of care and the burden on the health system.
The seminar proved to be a great success and many participants commented they wanted to learn more about dealing with diabetes and they hoped that similar events would be organised in the future.
Living With Diabetes was sponsored by Vivian Corporation, an established leader in the marketing of diverse branded products, which has one unifying goal – that to improve the quality of life of the residents of Malta and Gozo.
