Tipico Building – DeMicoli & Associates

The award for this category goes to an iconic building in keeping with a site well known for landmark architecture, located in fact just beside the Portomaso Tower. The form and light-weight steel structure of the building refers to maritime vessels. The project maximises the site of a formerly low-lying building and rises to thirteen storeys above the street level of the complex. Several challenges with respect to the foundations and the construction of the building have been overcome to provide a development which alludes to its context by using materials which can be found in the neighbouring tower but in a form that stands out on its own merit.

Simonds Farsons Cisk Chapel and Canteen – Openworkstudio

This project is a good example of how small-scale projects can be designed in such a way that exemplifies high quality contemporary design. The attention to detail in this project is commendable, as is the industrial style of the interior design which alludes to the context of the project. In fact, the product – beer, is referenced in the use of warm brown colour tones within the canteen and the chapel, juxtaposed with concrete and steel materials, and complemented by well-designed lighting in both spaces.
