December industrial production down by 1.1% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the EU

In December 2022, the seasonally adjusted industrial production fell by 1.1% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the EU, compared with November 2022, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In November 2022, industrial production increased by 1.4% in the euro area and by 1.2% in the EU.

In December 2022 compared with December 2021, industrial production decreased by 1.7% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the EU.

The annual average industrial production for the year 2022, compared with 2021, increased by 0.9% in the euro area and by 1.9% in the EU.

In the euro area in December 2022, compared with November 2022, production of intermediate goods fell by 2.8%, durable consumer goods by 1.4%, non-durable consumer goods by 1.0% and capital goods by 0.4%, while production of energy grew by 1.3%.

In the EU, production of intermediate goods fell by 2.4%, durable consumer goods by 0.7% and capital goods by 0.3%, while production of non-durable consumer goods grew by 1.0% and energy by 1.3%.

Among Member States for which data are available, the largest monthly decreases were registered in Ireland ( 8.5%), Luxembourg (-5.2%) and Lithuania (-4.0%). The highest increases were observed in Denmark (+13.5%), Portugal (+4.1%) and Hungary (+3.8%).

Annual comparison by main industrial grouping and by Member State

In the euro area in December 2022, compared with December 2021, production of energy fell by 9.3%, intermediate goods by 6.9% and durable consumer goods by 1.3%, while production of capital goods remained stable and production of non-durable consumer goods grew by 7.9%.

In the EU, production of energy fell by 9.5%, intermediate goods by 6.2% and durable consumer goods by 2.1%, while production of capital goods grew by 1.7% and of non-durable consumer goods by 11.1%.

Among Member States for which data are available, the largest annual decreases were registered in Slovakia ( 13.1%), Estonia (-11.5%) and Luxembourg (-8.4%). The highest increases were observed in Denmark (+26.1%), Malta (+17.1%), Hungary and Poland (both +5.8%).
