Vivian takes bold step to tackle workplace mental health crisis

Company partners with Richmond Foundation to offer confidential support for employees

A recent survey found that 17% of employees experience a diagnosed mental health condition annually, while an additional 38% report feelings of burnout, anxiety, or low motivation. Alarmingly, 28% of respondents admitted feeling miserable at work, and 60% said they felt emotionally detached.

Despite growing awareness, only 13% of employees feel comfortable discussing mental health at work, and one in three believes their employer should do more to support them.

Recognising the urgent need for action, Vivian has launched a comprehensive mental health support program in partnership with Richmond Foundation, making professional guidance more accessible to its employees. The initiative ensures that all staff members can book confidential therapy sessions, with no notification to the company, offering a safe space to seek support.

“Too many employees suffer in silence, afraid to speak up about their mental well-being,” said Sarah Wismayer, Director at Vivian. “At Vivian, we are taking a proactive approach because mental health is just as important as physical health. This initiative is about fostering a culture where our employees feel supported, not judged.”

The program kicked off with a Healthy Minds Talk at Vivian Academy, providing employees with practical tools to identify and manage life stressors, from workplace pressures to personal challenges. The company also recognizes the need for managerial training, ensuring that leaders can access expert advice from Richmond Foundation on supporting their teams.

A recent Well-Being at the Workplace Report by misco revealed that 86% of Maltese employees reported work-related mental wellness challenges such as stress and anxiety—up from 63% in 2021. Yet only 62% rated their mental well-being positively in 2024.

As businesses increasingly recognize that a healthy workforce is a productive workforce, Vivian is leading by example, demonstrating that prioritizing employee well-being is not just a corporate responsibility but a strategic advantage.
