The government is currently discussing the possibility of introducing a bespoke service for British nationals traveling to Malta after Brexit.

The proposal is in line with the Maltese government’s commitment to make Malta the most UK-friendly country after Brexit, Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi said.

He was speaking during a commemorative ceremony at London’s Heathrow Airport to mark Air Malta’s 45 years since inception. Air Malta, he said, was of strategic importance to the island’s economic framework.

“Throughout its history, Air Malta has provided exceptional service to its clients. The developments earmarked for Air Malta will ensure the airline's growth by securing a link to all European airports and North Africa,” he said.

Mizzi said the national airline was a standard bearer for the country and it was government’s duty to see it grow.

Air Malta as a catalyst for Malta’s growth

Air Malta chairperson Charles Mangion lauded the airline's historic milestone saying that “despite the turbulence of the aviation industry Air Malta is now surviving and growing".

Mangion said Air Malta was crucial for the growth of the tourism industry over the years.

The airline was set up by a parliamentary resolution on 21 March 1973. It operated its first flight a year later on 1 April 1974.

Initially, it had started its flying operations with two wet-leased Boeing 720Bs from Pakistan International Airlines operating its first flights to London and Rome.

In a statement the airline said: “Air Malta is proud to celebrate its 45th anniversary since its first flight, acknowledging the contribution of all those people who believed in it from its inception and to those staff members who have worked and contributed to its development for the past 45 years. The airline is also especially thankful to its loyal customers who have supported it throughout these years.”
