Ganado Advocates’ forthcoming 9th edition of the Annual Banking and Payments Law Seminar will delve into the increased responsibilities being faced by banks and payment institutions when protecting their customers from fraud.

The afternoon seminar on the 17th of April at the Hilton is being hosted in collaboration with the Malta Bankers’ Association and is now considered a staple yearly appointment that brings together key lawyers, directors, regulatory advisors and other senior officers to discuss some of the most important developments in this industry.

This year’s seminar features an impressive lineup of speakers and panellists covering a wide range of topics.

Catherine Galea, Head of Banking Supervision at the Malta Financial Services Authority, will be the keynote speaker and will address evolving financial regulation related to the banking sector. Chiara Frendo, a specialist financial services litigator at Ganado Advocates, will address institutions’ obligations towards customers regarding fraud.,

The seminar will be chaired by Conrad Portanier from Ganado, whereas Marcel Cassar CEO of APS Bank and Chair of the Malta Bankers’ Association will also deliver an opening address. Amongst the panellists, we have notable professionals including Jean-Noel Cutajar from BNF Bank plc, Aaron Mifsud from APS Bank plc, Marisa Said from Bank of Valletta plc, James Debono from Ganado, Rachel Gauci, Deputy Head, Fintech Supervision at the MFSA and Kirsten Ellul, Senior Expert, Regulation and Oversight Office at the Central Bank of Malta.

Commenting about the forthcoming seminar, Dr Conrad Portanier who heads the banking and finance team at Ganado Advocates explained how the organisation of the seminar is in line with one of the firm’s strategic priorities of developing ‘thought leadership’ in the sectors it specialises in.

The seminar will also include two separate breakout sessions to address more specific topics concerning banks and payment institutions.

The first session will examine how the new EU Consumer Credit Directive will impact lending practices in Malta, featuring a presentation by Roberta Carabott (Ganado) and a panel session moderated by Catherine Formosa (Ganado).

In the second session, Leonard Bonello (Ganado) will explore the impact of the new iteration of payment laws (PSD3 and PSR) on both banks and payment institutions and this will be followed by a panel session moderated by Paul Falzon (Ganado).

The event will end with some networking drinks.
