An unidentified Sicilian businessman was arrested in Pozzallo last Monday while he attempted to board the Virtu’ Ferries catamaran to Malta with €52,000 in undeclared cash.
The man was reportedly arrested by officers from the Guardia di Finanza who noted him behaving suspiciously while clearly attempting to hurriedly get through embarkation.
When escorted for inspection, the businessman who hails from Modica, reportedly refused to answer the officers if he had anything in particular to declare.
A search in his bag revealed stacks of €100 and €50 notes. He was immediately arrested.
Meanwhile, in another search conducted on a Libyan national who was about to board the same catamaran to Malta, yielded 40 pairs of false Nike running shoes.
The man was also arrested pending investigations.
