GO announced a significant increase in its investment in Maltese productions, committing €5 million to support local production houses over the coming years.

This news comes after an initial €2.4 million investment in 2022, when GO launched its television channel, TOKIS, which has since become one of Malta’s most-watched channels, boasting over 5 million views monthly.

The announcement was made during the first-ever TOKIS Awards, held last week to celebrate local talent.

Nikhil Patil, CEO at GO, highlighted the company's vision to bring Maltese stories and culture to life.

"Two years ago, we had a dream of showcasing our stories and love for Maltese drama. From that dream, TOKIS was born, and it’s been an incredible journey, not only for us but for the thousands of customers who love Maltese content," he said.

GO’s streaming platform TOKIS has been well-received, with a strong viewership and growing international appeal. Patil also revealed that the platform would soon be available to Maltese expats worldwide through the GO TV app.

"We recognised the financial and resource constraints in the industry, so we stepped in with the technology, resources, and demand to help grow Maltese TV production," Patil added.

The inaugural TOKIS Awards, aired recently, were another testament to the platform’s success. With 15,000 votes cast by the public, winners were determined across eight categories.

Notable winners included Lara Azzopardi for Best Female Actress (Ċaqqufa), Fabian Scerri Decarlo for Best Male Actor, and Jason Zerafa for Best Director (Mejta biex Ngħix). Claudia Faniello’s Noli won Best Theme Song, and Jeanelle Spiteri took home Best New Talent for her role in Luna.

The highly popular show Simpatici claimed two prestigious awards: Most Popular Production Overall and Most Viewed Production on TOKIS. Meanwhile, Noli was named the Most Viewed GO Originals Production.

Alison Mercieca, Head of Marketing at GO added “We launched TOKIS with our customers in mind, and it’s clear from the overwhelming engagement that they appreciate the content we provide. These awards celebrate the hard work of our industry partners and the support of our loyal viewers.”
