Public Open Spaces Award
The 2020 Public Open Spaces Award's winner is Piazzetta, Sliema by Martin Xuereb & Associates
Winning Submission
Piazzetta, Sliema - Martin Xuereb & Associates
The space allows for a sense of calm and tranquillity in a hectic area along the Sliema seafront, elevated from the hustle and bustle of the promenade. Seating is successfully incorporated into the scheme, which includes access from the lower levels by means of an elevator on one side and a step-free access on the other. Landscaping, though yet to mature, softens the scheme. Beneath the piazzetta, retail outlets are integrated within a podium floor which features a continuation of the design of the space above. At night, sensitive lighting complements the design and integrates the scheme within its context.
Special commendation
Pjazzetta l-Ghammiedi – Perit Mariella Xuereb
The project relates to the provision of a public open space where before there was none. Whenever nondescript and incongruous buildings can be demolished, the provision of public open spaces within the village cores are to be encouraged. Landscaping and seating have been provided for, with a water feature providing a central focus point for the space. The design of the paving denotes where the former building outline once was stood, and delineates the space at the junction of two streets in this historic area.
